How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

Easy installation, reasonable price, works great! Much to my surprise, our trailer had a 2.25" top hole and a 2" bottom hole. This jack fit fine. The lights are helpful.

by:

I recieved the jack in a timely fashion and the box was destroyed (packing wasn't good) and was a bit worried but it didn't have a scratch on it and was very easy to install. Bolted right up!I really am happy with it and I would recommend it and etrailer!!

by:

Great work! Had a customer with a tight time line that Alex made certain of a timely delivery.

by:

The three items we ordered arrived on time. The electric jack was easy to install, 3 bolts and 1 wire. Took less then an hour. It makes hitching and unhitching our Keystone Hideout much easier.
Customer service was very helpful when we called to add a third item to our order.
No Hassle!

by:

Nice jack . Fit up on travel trailer was good did have to take 3/16 off the back of round mounting plate so it would not hit the battery box I did check with Ultra-fab and they got back to me the same day ,wanted to make sure this would not effect warranty . well built and quality was very good . So much better then my old jack .

by:

Easy install in 5 minutes, works great, excellent customer service, fast service and shipping. No more hand cranking for me.

Works great, fast and easy, my friend bought one from you after he saw mine

by:

Lift came super quick from etrailer. Very easy to install since replacing older model of the same lift. Ultra-Fab should include wire and fuse needed for the positive wire -had to reuse old fuse!

by:

Easy ordering, good tech support. Fast shipping. 30 minute install. Works great. Would recommend this item.

Working very good. Have only used it about 6 times so far. Great product.

by:

The fit was flawless and it handles my Flagstaff Mac with ease. It is a pop-up and not a huge load, but it saves a 70 yr. old a lot of cranking. Install was a breeze. Love it when items are as described. 6 day delivery over a holiday long week-end. Thanks for the great service.

by:

Easy to install. I also replaced bolts with grade 8 bolts.
Ultra fab is a good product.

by:

Excellent figment and easy installation!

by:

etrailer had the best price. Shipped to me in a few days. Took about 1 hour to convert from the 4th bad liepert smart jack. Works fast and easy. As I read on other reviews it is "wobbly" side to side compared to the old jack but rating are equal.
Put on my enclosed ATC car trailer. Have not yet loaded the car - I think that should only be done when "hooked up". Check with me in a few months after I have used it a bunch.

David

doing fine

The Ultra-Fab power jack is great so far. This was a direct replacement for the stock original jack. Easy to install. This one has a fuse in-line as the original jack did not. I like that feature.

AOK

by:

Unit was out of stock but I was willing to wait. Well it was delivered a lot sooner than I thought and was kept updated about delivery date.(no guessing). The jack installed easily and works as expected. I am very satisfied with the service and the product. Thank you etrailer!

Used the electric jack this past weekend. Really like it, glad we got it. Very easy to install. Will recommend this product to anyone wanting a easier way to hook up your TT.

Bought this one year ago and it died already. It is not one that I would recommend. We had to hand crank on several occasions. We bought something different and threw this one away. As for Etrailer, great company.

by:

Well I guess its been a year since purchasing the Ultra-Fab Electric A-Frame Jack as per the email I received from etrailer. I have been very happy with the purchase, this is so much better than cranking a handle!! Installation was very easy too. I liked this one since it has a zerk fitting for lubing the jack where others didn't seem to have that. All in all, I would purchase this jack again and through etrailer.com too.

by:

The product was easy to install. I put the trailer on my truck hitch before I started. No need for impact tool to loosen the bolts on the manual jack. Your jack fit fine, even cleared the propane bottle cover, although I have to sqeeze a little to get to the light switch. My trailer is a 30' Keystone Hornet with slideout. Your jack sounded like it was working hard, but it kept raising. It's the 3500 lb model, and I didn't measure the tongue weight before I started. However, it was right at freezing outside, and my battery isn't new, but all went well. Plenty of travel, and I like the removeable foot. All in all, I'm a Happy Camper.

by:

Worked as advertised. Easy installatio n.

by:

easy to install and one wire to connect. works great so far on my Pace American V-nose enclosed trailer with a couple snowmobiles on board

Russ

Very good, recently sold this trailer

by:

Great product, was easy to install and wire up. Very durable, grease tip location on the tube very convenient. Cons ( would like to see a foot extension for the tube and a more durable cover for the grease tip, other than that its a thumps up for this product.

by:

Low price but high quality. Works faster than most Jack's out there. My only concern is the length of the shaft. I need to use a 6 inch block under it. Works great. I now have 2 of them. One on my enclosed cargo trailer and one on my 26 ft travel trailer. Highly recommend. It

by:

Great jack - haven't hooked up the electronics, but it's been great. The little rubber cover over the manual jack nut drive cracked, but I assume that is because I keep using it repeatedly (more than it was designed for). I wish it had a zerk fitting or two on the jack tube, just to keep it from seizing up in the future.

by:

Installs easily, works great. Be careful to shut off the up/down switch as soon as the jack reaches the end of its travel, otherwise you will blow a fuse.

Dick W.

7/26/2020

Wonderful. Easy for the grandson to blow the fuse, but that is why the fuse is there.

by:

My husband is very happy with this electric lift. It certainly saves his shoulder!

  • Recommended Heavier Duty Upgrade For FIC 3500 Electric A-Frame Trailer Jack
Electric A-frame trailer jacks often have the same bolt pattern, yes. Just keep in mind that a higher-capacity jack doesn't necessarily mean more speed, it's all about the jack itself. For example, the 3,500 lb Ultra-Fab Electric A-Frame Jack # UF38-944017 extends 6" in 25.3 seconds (with 1,000 lbs of tongue weight), while the 4,000 lb Bulldog Trailer Jack # BD500200 extends 6" in 28.5 seconds (with 1,000 lbs of tongue weight). That said, since you mentioned wanting a heavier-duty jack,...

I think the best value for an A-frame tongue jack is the Stromberg Carlson # SC63VR which is rated for 4500 pounds of tongue weight. This is 1000 pounds more than other models, and even though you may not need this much capacity, you will find that the jack motor runs quick and effortlessly. This will add years to its life. This jack also has a unique clutch that prevents damage from over extending or retracting the jack foot - the most common reason for jack failure. I also like that...

  • Improving Ground for Allowing Ultra Fab 3502 Jack to Function
Sounds like maybe the ground of the trailer is not adequate. Since the jack # UF38-944017 grounds through the mounting hardware the trailer needs to have a solid ground. You can try running a jumper wire from the mounting assembly of the jack to the main ground of trailer harness and that should fix the problem.

Based on the description you provided of the issue you are having with your Ultra-Fab Electric A-Frame Jack # UF38-944017 it sounds like the gears inside are worn and require the extra pressure for them to be engaged. Unfortunately the gears are not available as replacement parts, so the most cost effective option would be to just keep placing your foot on the jack to lower it. The only other option would be replacing it with another # UF38-944017. I included a video of the # UF38-944017...

  • Replacement Powered Jack Recommendation for Keystone Springdale with Broken Jack
Since nearly all A-frame trailer jacks don't have replacement motors your best option will be to replace the entire jack. The LIppert # LC643589 Smart Jack is a good choice. • Barker Manufacturing VIP 3000 Jack Will Retract but Not Extend
The most likely cause of the issues you are having with your Barker Manufacturing VIP 3000 Jack is going to be either a poor power source or bad ground. I recommend you check to make sure you have a full 12 volts going into the jack. If so then I would reground the jack after sanding down the surface or reattaching the ground wire. • Can an Ultra-Fab Electric Trailer Jack that has Been Over Extended be Repaired
The way that the electric trailer jack # UF38-944017 works is using an ACME screw and a nut. The nut is fixed and the screw goes up and down in the nut. At the end of the screw the metal is twisted, smashed, or otherwise purposely cross threaded to prevent the screw from just coming out and the load dropping. If you try to raise a jack with this type of design too far it damages that nut and the screw. Those parts cannot be replaced. You will need to replace the whole jack. This is not...

I am sorry to hear about the issues you are having with the Ultra-Fab Electric A-Frame Jack part # UF38-944017. The gears and or threaded rod are not replaceable parts therefore your only option is to replace the entire jack. I know this may not be what you are looking to do but it is truly your only option. The closer a powered accessory (like a tongue jack) is to it's power source, the better it'll operate, due to the fact that the longer the wire run is, the more power you'll lose along the way.
